In financial modeling, it’s important to have a solid understanding of how a dividend payment impacts a company’s balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement. In CFI’s financial modeling course, you’ll learn how to link the statements together so that any dividends paid flow through all the appropriate accounts. Companies that do not want to issue cash or property dividends but still want to provide some benefit to shareholders may choose between small stock dividends, large stock dividends, and stock splits. Both small and large stock dividends occur when a company distributes additional shares of stock to existing stockholders. The journal entry to record the declaration of the cash dividends involves a decrease (debit) to Retained Earnings (a stockholders’ equity account) and an increase (credit) to Cash Dividends Payable (a liability account).
Do dividends go through the P&L?
A dividend is a payment made to a shareholder in proportion to the number of shares they own in a corporation. The company's profit and loss statement ("P&L") contains amounts for the dividends declared and paid during the year and the dividends claimed but not yet paid.

Next comes the firm’s earnings per share, which is calculated by dividing net income by the number of shares. When the stock market boomed in the 1920s, investors essentially had to fly blind in deciding which companies were sound investments because, at the time, most businesses had no What financial statement do dividends appear on? legal obligation to reveal their finances. After the 1929 market crash, the government enacted legislation to help prevent a repeat disaster. To this day these reforms require publicly traded companies to regularly disclose certain details about their operations and financial position.
Which financial statement reports net income and dividends?
Income Statement. Unlike the balance sheet, the income statement covers a range of time, which is a year for annual financial statements and a quarter for quarterly financial statements. The income statement provides an overview of revenues, expenses, net income, and earnings per share.
In a 2-for-1 split, for example, the value per share typically will be reduced by half. As such, although the number of outstanding shares and the price change, the total market value remains constant. If you buy a candy bar for $1 and cut it in half, each half is now worth $0.50. The total value of the candy does not increase just because there are more pieces. Most companies report their dividends on a cash flow statement, in a separate accounting summary in their regular disclosures to investors, or in a stand-alone press release, but that’s not always the case. If not, you can calculate dividends using a balance sheet and an income statement.

Shareholders’ equity includes common stock, additional paid-in capital, and retained earnings. A traditional stock split occurs when a company’s board of directors issue new shares to existing shareholders in place of the old shares by increasing the number of shares and reducing the par value of each share. For example, in a 2-for-1 stock split, two shares of stock are distributed for each share held by a shareholder.

After the distribution, the total stockholders’ equity remains the same as it was prior to the distribution. The amounts within the accounts are merely shifted from the earned capital account (Retained Earnings) to the contributed capital accounts (Common Stock and Additional Paid-in Capital). The difference is the 3,000 additional shares of the stock dividend distribution.
This is useful in measuring a company’s ability to keep paying or even increasing a dividend. The higher the payout ratio, the harder it may be to maintain it; the lower, the better. We recommend the Category code above based on our default chart of accounts. If you have a different numbering system, just use the number that suits your business. We recommend that you create the following categories to record your dividends.
- Noncumulative preferred stock is preferred stock on which the right to receive a dividend expires whenever the dividend is not declared.
- Managers of corporations have several types of distributions they can make to the shareholders.

The split causes the number of shares outstanding to increase by four times to 240,000 shares (4 × 60,000), and the par value to decline to one-fourth of its original value, to $0.125 per share ($0.50 ÷ 4). A small stock dividend occurs when a stock dividend distribution is less than 25% of the total outstanding shares based on the shares outstanding prior to the dividend distribution. To illustrate, assume that Duratech Corporation has 60,000 shares of $0.50 par value common stock outstanding at the end of its second year of operations. Duratech’s board of directors declares a 5% stock dividend on the last day of the year, and the market value of each share of stock on the same day was $9.
